People always think that yoga can do more for your body than just keeping fit and flexible. Research shows now can help control weight, lower back pain, insomnia and even heart disease. Studies show yoga helps weight loss and maintenance. In a study of 15,000 adults, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center show that those who do not practice yoga gained about 18.5 pounds over 10 years than those who practiced at least four years. There is also research done in the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California. The study found people who regularly practice yoga and meditation, exercise and watch their diets lost more weight than those who do, and eat a balanced diet, but not yoga.

Besides Yoga can improve range of motion in the hips, reducing back pain. A study conducted by The American College of Sports Medicine, showed that yoga increases flexibility and reduces back pain. This is a small study done on older women age 44-62.But back pain should always be diagnosed professionally before embracing on an exercise program, including yoga. Yoga backbends and forward bending can aggravate certain conditions to return.

Yoga can also soothe your body and mind that can help people who suffer from insomnia. Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, PhD, an instructor of medicine., Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School has recently published a study. He found half hour to 45 minutes of yoga every day with a focus on meditation and breathing, helps chronic insomniacs sleep through the night. The subjects slept their overall rose by 12%.

Yoga breathing can help lower your heart rate and calming the nervous system.Breathing techniques can help relieve anxiety and severe depression and stress.Practicing yoga for one hour and half three times a week, your heart health in just six weeks. A recent study from Yale University School of Medicine, 33 men and women who practice yoga at that level. It lowers blood pressure and increase the capacity of their vessels “to expand and contract by 17%. Researchers believe the improvement is based on a stress-reducing benefits of yoga.
